- Ray Optics Application in Optical Mineralogy: This link takes you to an image that shows what a mineral might look like under a high powered microscope with a few different light filters added on to tell the observer something unique about the mineral. It’s called a Uniaxial Interference Figure. It comes from the different rays of light produced, which depend on the index of refraction of the mineral, known as the RI (Refraction Index), or just “n”. OSU geology students taking Optical Minerology use figures like this to identify minerals.
