Live Lectures

There will be three 50 minute lecture sections on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Attend any section, either at 8 am, 9 am, or 3 pm each day. You may attend live lectures in person (Weniger 151), or via Zoom (Links below).

Live Lecture Zoom links => HERE

Note: if attending via Zoom, you must log into Zoom through your Oregon State account before clicking on the link. The lecture Zoom password will be shared via a Canvas announcement to ensure security. You can ask your lab group, lab TA, or email the insructor if you can't find it.

During these lectures we will work together through the Lecture Assignments on Canvas associated with the topic of the day (see the calendar below). You can bring up Zoom in one window on your computer, and the Canvas assignment on another (or use your phone). You only need 150 total lecture assignment points for full credit on the lecture portion of the class. Canvas can't correctly implement this rule, so note your grade is often higher than what Canvas says.

Async  |  If you are unable to attend the live lecture you can work through the Canvas lecture assignment asychronously.

We strongly encourage you to attend the live lecture sessions where we will be working on problem solving. Our research has shown that students who attend the live sessions have on average almost an entire letter grade higher in the class. Participation in these events will result in full credit for the lecture portion of your grade.

Lecture assignments are due each week on Friday at midnight.

First Lecture Recording

Fall 2021  |  https://media.oregonstate.edu/media/t/1_nbcnw8x8

Fall 2022  |  Coming soon...

Lecture Recordings  |  After the first class we will be spending lectures working on problem solving. Zoom recordings of the lectures would be largely dead air time while groups are working. We created the Asynchronous lectures, which have video solutions (from a live lecture) to nearly all of the same problems worked in class. So Zoom recordings would be essentially redundant to those videos. You can access those solutions direclty in the Solutions Archive above the Calendar.

Homepage Legend

The video below introduces you to the features on the homepage.

https://media.oregonstate.edu/media/t/1_ehqh7mak

We have a naming/coding scheme for our curriculum and it's important you understand how to interpret it.

Lectures: We strongly encourage you to attend the live session if you can.

Live = Real-time group learning guided by the instructor (full credit for participation)

Async = Asynchronous Canvas quiz if you can't make live session (credit based on correctness)

Learning Cycle Numbers: 1 = Pre-lecture Familiarization, 2 = Foundational Lecture, 3 = Practice Post-lecture, 4 = Mastery Challenge Homework.

Code Legend: [Topic Code].[Lecture Number].[Stage in the Learning Cycle]

For Example: GR.L1.1 stands for General Review, lecture 1, pre-lecture homework.

Topic Codes:

  • GR = General Review
  • VO = Vector Operations
  • AQ = Average Quantities
  • K1 = One Dimensional Kinematics
  • K2 = Two Dimensional Kinematics
  • N1 = 1st Forces Module
  • N2 = 2nd Forces Module
  • N3 = 3rd Forces Module
  • IM = Impulse and Momentum
  • CM = Conservation of Momentum
  • WE = Work and Energy
  • CE = Conservation of Energy

Reflective Writing: RW 1 stands for the week 1 reflective writing exercise.

Class OneNote | Question Templates

All pre-lecture, lecture, and post-lecture questions where developed using OneNote. If possible, download the OneNote .one files and run them off your computer with the OneNote app, rather than using the browser version. For Mac users this is not so straightforward. It will allow you to use OneNote in edit mode which enables writing directly on the template with your tablet. If that doesn't work you can import the PDFs to your favorite notes app. The browser version is read only.
