Proportional reasoning involves identifying how variables are changing with respect to each other. This is like asking, "If I turn this knob (change this variable), how will the machine (output of equation) respond? or how can I turn the rest of the knobs to compensate and retain the same answer?" This skill is useful for identifying causality in everyday life.

Learning Objectives

Summary: Learning Objectives

Students will be able to…

  1. Identify which quantities are changing and which are static, including numeric coefficients.
  2. Perform proportional reasoning on single variables raised to the first power.
  3. Perform proportional reasoning on single variables raised to a power other than one.
  4. Perform proportional reasoning on relationships involving more than one variable changing.
